Reinstatement of withdrawn membership policy

We welcome back members who share our values and standards while still reserving the right to withdraw membership at any time.

There are different requirements for the reinstatement of membership dependent on the initial reason that membership was withdrawn. This policy details some of the main situations but should your particular circumstances not be covered please contact us on bacp@bacp.co.uk for further information.

Being unsuccessful in attaining registered member status

Within 31 days of termination following being unsuccessful in becoming a registered member, membership can be reinstated by booking on to a Certificate of Proficiency (CoP) and paying the membership subscription. After 31 days, membership can be reinstated by booking on and paying for a CoP, completing the relevant reinstatement forms, and paying the membership fees. Membership will be reinstated as an individual member.

However, an individual member who has already passed the CoP, or graduated from an accredited course but did not manage to attain registered member status, will need to complete the Register terms and conditions and pay the membership subscription before membership as a registered member is reinstated.

In all cases membership will start with new renewal dates once all elements are completed and processed.

Being unsuccessful in passing the CoP (after three attempts)

If a member is unsuccessful in passing the CoP after three attempts, membership can be reinstated after six months by booking on and paying for a CoP, passing the CoP, completing a new Invitation to membership application pack, and paying the new 12 months membership fees.

Members are able to pay to book, complete and pass the CoP prior to the conclusion of the six months’ exclusion period; however, membership cannot be reapplied for until six months have passed since termination.

In all cases membership will start with new renewal dates once all elements are completed and processed.

Being unsuccessful in passing the Register audit

If a member is unsuccessful in passing the Register audit, membership will be withdrawn for a minimum of six months and until such a time as the member evidences their suitability to re-join the Register.Ìý

Once the requirements of registration have been demonstrated, membership can then be reinstated by the completion of the relevant reinstatement forms and paying the membership fees. In all cases membership will start with new renewal dates once all elements are completed and processed.

Ineligibility for a membership category

We can withdraw membership, or change your membership category (or stop providing a service) if we find that you are not eligible for it - for example, upon further examination of your qualification you do not meet the eligibility criteria for a membership category. We will try to tell you in advance if this happens, but where we are breaking any rules or laws by continuing your membership or service, or it is likely to cause confusion or misrepresentation to the public or employers, we would have to end your membership immediately.

If we offered you membership, category upgrades or services and you no longer meet our stated eligibility criteria due to the changes we make, we can end or change your membership or service, provided we give you opportunity to make representation. If this happened, we would try to help you find a membership category or a service that you were eligible for and that meets your needs, so that you can continue your relationship with us.

Should your membership be ended due to ineligibility for a membership category, reinstatement would be via the completion of the relevant reinstatement forms and payment of the membership fees. In all cases membership will start with new renewal dates once all elements are completed and processed.

After immediate ending

We may end your membership with immediate effect where we have withdrawn membership due to reasonable grounds for thinking that you have done any of the following things:

  • you put us in a position where we might break a law, regulation, code or other duty that applies to us if we continue your membership
  • you behave in a threatening or abusive manner to our staff
  • if we believe that maintaining your membership might expose us to action or censure from any regulator or law enforcement agency

In such a case a new Invitation to membership application pack will require completing to reinstate your membership after such an ending, plus payment of the new 12 months’ membership fees. Applications may be referred to the appropriate sub-committee or working group (Article 12.3) to ensure that reinstating membership will be of benefit to both parties. In all cases membership will start with new dates once all elements are completed and processed.

Following ending after a professional conduct related matter

To reinstate your membership after ending through professional conduct related matters (Article 12.6) requires the completion of a new Invitation to membership application pack, and payment of the new 12 months’ membership fees. Applications will be referred to professional conduct to ensure that any sanctions have now been met. In all cases membership will start with new dates once all elements are completed and processed.

Reinstatement after three years of ending or withdrawing membership

If membership is still dormant, after any of the above situations, for three years or more a new Invitation to membership application pack will require completion and payment of the current 12 months’ membership fees. Any previous CoP results or accreditation statuses will not be valid.

This policy should be read in conjunction with ŠÊ˜·³ÇëŠ×ÓÍÆË]’s Standing Orders, Articles of Association, Register terms and conditions, Professional Conduct Procedure, other policies and Ethical Framework - see Membership policies.
